Workshop "Technological services and commercialization prospects", Odessa (Ukraine), May 12-14, 2010
Following established practice, the first day of the seminar explored the experience of British companies in the commercialisation of technical services. CNCP expert Mike Birks spoke about the provision of consultancy services in the sphere of energy efficiency, including services provided through collaborative CNCP projects. Alison Crossley from Oxford University gave a presentation on the commercialisation of technical services in materials science. Chris Perks, representing a company called Landauer, spoke on commercial services relating to radiation protection. CNCP expert Steve Sugden talked about commercial irradiation. Lessons drawn by the companies from their experience in these fields, included how best to position the services being offered in relation to market demand and issues relating to the regulatory environment. The programme for the second day of the seminar concerned activities covered by CNCP projects. Reports covered such areas as plasma treatment, services provided by nuclear spectrometry and dosimetry laboratories, neutron activation analysis, accreditation of specialists, the provision of complex analytical services for metal extraction companies, energy efficiency and energy saving technologies. CNCP’s coordinator in Almaty, Yevgenny Yermakov, in his presentation, described new types of technical services with commercial prospects for the Institute: the certification of specialists - especially for European minerals extraction companies working in Kazakhstan, the organisation of commercial training, and also materials certification. In Kurchatov (Kazakhstan), services provided by the centre for individual dosimetry are being commercialised and a centre for radiation safety training is being created with support from CNCP. In Samarkand (Uzbekistan), the nuclear physics laboratory is carrying out similar work in the field of radiation control. One of the sessions was dedicated to successful examples of technical services provided by the Snezhinsk company Diagnostics and Energy Efficiency, which had been set up through a CNCP project. In the words of the Director of the Company, Alexei Kholodov, half the success of the company was due to effective business management, but in the first six months start-up funding and an aggressive marketing strategy were essential.
