Title |
Setting up of full-scale production of protective and decorative iridescent holograms.
Objectives |
- Arrangement of production of modern high-tech produce - holographic self-adhesive labels that collapse if unstuck and holographic
stamps from foil for hot embossing.
- Reach sales volume for proposed produce of about 700,000 GBP per year by the third year of project implementation.
- Mastering of a large market of holographic produce that ensures efficient protection against counterfeits and fakes of documents,
securities and mass demanded items.
- To create 19 new jobs in Snezhinsk, including 11 for former employees of VNIITF.

Background |
Four partners wanted to set up a company called Kripton to produce holograms. Holography is a
technology increasingly used worldwide to protect items such as banknotes, visas, and goods
from counterfeiters and fraudsters. The company plans to produce two types of hologram -
self-adhesive stamps and stamps made from foil for hot embossing. These are in regular use in
several industrial sectors and their usage is increasing especially in Russia where such
safeguards are in their relative infancy compared to other countries with more mature markets.
Market research has indicated two specific opportunities: protection against copying and
distributing video and audio materials and protection of spare parts for heavy trucks, cranes,
aeroplanes and helicopters. There are very few makers of holograms outside Moscow, St Petersburg
and Novosibirsk but companies are now looking more closely at finding regional suppliers. As a new
company, the owners have recognised the importance of taking a strategic approach to the business
and will commission a Moscow company to produce master holograms which can then be used in
production. They also intend to form an alliance with a company based in Almaty to provide initial
support and training.

Plan |
It is planned to tender for equipment, take delivery and install the equipment, refurbish facilities, and then recruit and train staff.

Leadership |
The director of this project (and joint owner of the company) has worked for many years at VNIITF. During the 1990s he worked on R&D projects in holography and gained much technical knowledge of the field. However, he lacks business experience and he and his partners will have to learn quickly if they are to make a success of this project.

Jobs |
9 new jobs (of them 9 for former employee of VNIITF) had been created by the end of Q 1, 2011-2012.

Forthcoming activity |
Activities to promote the product in Russia will continue.
Cost |
Total cost of the project is £285,423.
The DECC's contribution is £192,400 (as a capital grant to purchase equipment including machines for embossing and cutting holograms, and applying adhesive).
£ 93,023 (the Beneficiary's contribution) will be provided by the partners and from borrowings to cover rental of the premises, purchase of raw materials, some equipment procurement, and staff salaries and training.
