Seversk
Fly-ash products
Title

Products made from processed ash waste from Seversk power station.
Objectives

- Develop economically efficient technologies for the production of various heat insulation materials from Seversk fly-ash.

- Select the preferred technology for a plant at SCK, and prepare samples of the proposed material.

- Undertake tests on the thermal and other properties of this material.

- Prepare a brief of work for the construction of the required facility.

- To create 30 new jobs in Seversk, including 30 for former employees of SCK.
Summary

The purpose of this project is to use waste ash from power plants using solid organic fuel to manufacture "penosilicate", a construction material with good thermal insulation properties. This has two benefits:

  • It recycles a waste product from the Seversk heat power plant that is currently dumped. Recycling of waste ash will become increasingly important when the proposed cogeneration plant becomes operational following the closure of the nuclear power station at Seversk.
  • It will enable the manufacture of materials required in the construction industry that have good sound and thermal insulation properties.

Work under the project schedule has been completed and SCK is looking for external investment to fund the manufacturing using penosilicate technology within the framework of a business plan developed under the CNCP project. 7 jobs have been created in the concrete production facility.

The contract stipulated the creation of 30 (jobs for ex-nuclear workers 30) subject to their succeeding in finding investment funding for the construction of a production facility. Despite the fact that external funding was not identified, 7 jobs have been created in the existing facility. During the recent CNCP visit to Seversk, representatives of SCK and Seversk BDA started talks about spinning out the concrete production facility after formal closure of the project.

Jobs

7 new jobs (of them 7 for former employee of SCK) had been created by the end of Q 1, 2011-2012.
Cost

Total cost of the project is £ 280,470. The DECC's contribution is £120,000.
