Education with LINK

Staff training is one of CNCP’s key activities. One of the activities involved has been the training of a large group of the staff of KIPT through the International Institute of Management (LINK).

The need for management training was underlined when KIPT embarked on its first commercialization projects with CNCP. The approach to implementing these projects required preliminary market research to be carried out, a business plan to be prepared, and the organization of a function responsible for commercial activities. These requirements demanded additional knowledge and skills from KIPT’s scientific employees.

In 2005, a first group was selected to study with the Kharkov branch of LINK, which provided professional British Open University management education for the Programme. The group consisted of 12 people, administrators and scientific staff members involved in CNCP projects. Appropriate distance education was provided for one year, including the modules “Manager and Organisation”, “Manager and Personell”, “Finance and Information Management” and “Marketing and Quality Management”.

All of the students initially encountered difficulties over the amount of time and effort required, but by assimilating the material, through private study and attending sessions, and by working together with fellow students from different commercial organizations to analyse the management problems in their various businesses the work became more and more interesting and demanding. The results of the first year showed that the course had a positive effect on the work of the staff members concerned.

In 2006, a further group was recruited for LINK, this time involving 14 people, of whom 4 were to study on the higher “Corporate Manager” Diploma Level course. This course was designed to help develop the competences of managers in the middle and higher levels of large organisations. Already at this stage it was apparent that undergoing LINK education helped staff members to contribute to the process of change in KIPT and to rejuvenate the management structure of the Institute. In September 2006, a Commercialisation Unit was established with a LINK Diploma student as its head and in January 2007 a Department for State Purchases was set up under the leadership of another LINK Diploma student.

In all, so far, 55 staff members have taken up the opportunity initiated by CNCP for Link management education. Some of these have studied at the highest levels provided, the Diploma and the Master of Business Administration. In May 2009, four students from KIPT were among those who completed the MBA course successfully. They were from among the first group of students from KIPT who started their management education in 2005, thus completing the full cycle offered by LINK. It should be said that all of those who obtained the MBA received promotion or were given increased responsibilities in their sections.

The education of members of staff is a motivating factor in the Institute and contributes positively to the development of the commercialisation process in KIPT – both directly, through the knowledge acquired, and indirectly through the strengthening of links between the various departments and the Commercialisation Unit. Education in the field of management is in demand, as is demonstrated by the constant interest shown in it both by members of the scientific teams and by the central administration.
