Partnership between Kazakhstan Materials Research Tokamak (KTM)
and Joint European Torus (JET)
One of the most promising, ambitious and expensive projects of recent times involving the National Nuclear Centre of the
Republic of Kazakhstan (NNC) involves the establishment in Kurchatov of KTM - the Kazakhstan Materials Research Tokamak. The
project was launched in 1999, with funding from the Government of Kazakhstan and is being carried out in close collaboration
with Russian specialists and organisations.

The Eurasian Research Reactor Coalition
The idea of establishing a coalition of reactors including those working in the institutes of nuclear physics in Almaty and
Tashkent, was born in December 2007 at a meeting to develop strategic planning for research reactor activities held in Vienna
under the aegis of IAEA. The main function of the coalition would be to oversee the coordination of activities involving the
production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications.

The Welding Institute (Cambridge, Great Britain) to work together to introduce modern procedures and technologies designed to
raise the level of safety on production sites and on sites belonging to the nuclear complex of Kazakhstan.

Partnership between Sukhumi Institute of Physics and Technology (Georgia) and Mineral-7 Ltd (Ukraine)
The “Basalt” project proposed by the Sukhumi Institute of Physics and Technology (SIPT) for consideration by CNCP, had almost
reached the point where a decision was due on funding when Programme specialists began to question whether demand in Georgia for
basalt fibre paint additives would be sufficient and also whether the funding envisaged from CNCP and SIPT would be adequate. One
of the firms proposed as a source of equipment for the project was the Ukrainian company Mineral-7 Ltd.

In 2006, a Commercialisation Unit was set up in KIPT with support from CNCP. This was later merged with the Institute’s
Patents Research Laboratory and the new unit was given the name TIDIS.
