The purpose of the Study Tour was to provide the management team responsible
for the development of the Kurchatov Technopark with an insight into the
roles that Science and Technology Parks are playing in the UK. There are
a total of over 60 operating science parks across the UK, most of which
are adjacent to universities. A total of over 1.2 million sq m pf space
has been developed, housing well over 2,000 knowledge based businesses
employing around 50,000 people. The study tour will visit 6 facilities
the majority of which have operating links with national civil, defence
and nuclear research facilities: Oxford Science Park, Oxford Innovation,
Malvern Hills Science Park, Daresbury Sicence and Technology Park, Daresbury
Laboratories, Westlakes Science Park, and Manchester Science Park.
During the study tour special attention was focused on a range of planning
and operational issues including:
The aims and objectives of Science Parks in the UK
The role and value of technological links and involvement of outside
service companies to the planning and management of Science Parks
The location, planning and development of the built environment
The market focus of Science Parks and the attraction of suitable
occupants
The provision of added value property, business, technology services
by the Science Park
Organisation and management structure, staffing and funding
