Radiation treatment of materials and goods
Title

Radiation treatment of materials and goods.
Objectives

- Modernisation of the electron beam material conveyor.

- Adoption of western standard dosimetry and Quality Management Systems, potentially leading to full ISO accreditation.
Summary

The Sosny Institute has a pilot-scale cobalt-60 irradiator (UGU-420) followed by an electron beam accelerator (UELV - 10-10). As is the case in the West, such facilities have found commercial application in the area of sterilisation of single use medial goods and in the cross-linking of polymeric materials. As these facilities are unique in Belarus, their availability is important to the continued commercial development and success of domestic companies who produce products requiring such treatments. The Institute is seeking investment to update and expand the processing which today is carried out on a pilot scale. The proposed activities will see modernisation of the electron beam material conveyor and adoption of western standard dosimetry and Quality Management Systems, potentially leading to full ISO accreditation. Such accreditation is likely to become an essential requirement for these activities in due course (as it already is in the West).

The existing commercial revenue stream will be expanded as a result of this investment from around £ 100,000 today to an estimated £ 150,000 in the first year and £ 250,000 in the second year.

Jobs

13 new jobs (including 5 for the employees who worked before 1991) had been created by the end of Q 1, 2011-2012.
Cost

Total cost of the project is £ 475,150. The DECC's contribution is £ 105,600.
Beneficiary

Joint Institute of Power and Nuclear Research, Sosny, Minsk
