Facilities for processing and storage of radioactive wastes
Title

Facilities for processing and storage of radioactive wastes (feasibility study).
Objectives

- To carry out market research and prepare a business plan.
Summary

The Institute of Atomic Energy at the NNC in Kurchatov wish to establish facilities to process and store on a long-term basis radioactive wastes. The Institute intends to seek funds from the Kazakh Government to cover the costs of setting up such a facility. It estimates that 200 m3 of accumulated waste already exists principally arising from:

  • Nuclear reactor operations
  • Uranium mining
  • Oil and gas explorationа
  • Activities at the Semipalatinsk test site.

The aim of this project was to carry out market research and prepare a business plan as the basis for an application for Government funding. A project proposal was considered by the Steering Group in June 2006. The Feasibility Study for the project supported by CNCP was completed. An application for Government funding on the basis of the results of the Feasibility Study was approved by the Kazakh Government.

Outline Project completed. No further CNCP input required. Significant investments from Kazakhstan state funds will be provided for the organisation of radioactive waste storage and processing in Kurchatov.
