Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research – SOSNY, Belarus

The Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research is a successor to the Nuclear Energy Institute of the Belarus Academy of Science, which was established in 1965. In 1962 an IRT-2000 nuclear reactor was put into operation on the site of the future institute, followed by a powerful multi-chamber gamma-device which started in 1968. Other nuclear technical facilities followed. It undertook various defence related projects for the former nuclear weapons programme.

The Institute designed gas-cooled nuclear reactors, studied the application of ionizing radiation in the national economy, and created a mobile nuclear power plant. After the Chernobyl accident the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research became involved in solving nuclear environmental problems.

The Institute is now the only organization in the Republic that specializes in nuclear energy. A number of related areas are also being studied, including environmental monitoring and technetium manufacture.

Fields of Activity:

  • Fundamental and applied research in nuclear physics, elementary-particle physics, and high-energy physics;
  • Nuclear and radiation technologies;
  • Technologies to minimize the effects of accidents.

The Institute employs over 430 people, including 150 scientists, with 65 PhDs. It has research and technological equipment, which is unique in the country.

A number of joint production enterprises have been established with the Institute’s participation.

International activity involves fulfilling national obligations, such as nuclear weapons non-proliferation, the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials, IAEA Agreement, along with ISTC project work, contracts with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and with leading scientific centres in Europe and the USA.
